Equivalent circuit analysis of solid-rotor induction machines with reference to turbocharger accelerator applications

2006

Theoretical, numerical and experimental studies are described that have been carried out to develop a solid-rotor induction machine design for a particularly demanding application as an accelerator drive for a diesel engine turbocharger. In this application the turbo-motor will be required to operate at speeds of up to 130 000 rpm and in temperatures that can exceed 200°C. The results show that the equivalent circuit gives predictions that are of sufficient precision for design purposes and provides a useful design tool. It is shown that the use of a solid rotor affects the value of the stator leakage reactance and influences the motor performance through this effect as well as by presentin…

D-Q axis theory of thermomagnetic Curie motor

2010

This paper presents a the d-q axis theory of a thermomagnetic Curie motor. From this theory a maximization procedure of the performances of Curie motor has been developed. The proposed approach has shown that the thermomagnetic Curie motor is equivalent from a magnetic point of view to a d.c. electric machine. Consequently, a design of a Curie motor has been proposed and the calculated performances show a significant improvement in comparison to the performances reported in literature.

Analysis of magnetohydrodynamic generator driven by thermoacoustic engine for deep Space applications

2020

This paper discusses the results of theoretical and experimental investigation of magnetohydrodynamic generator with liquid metal working body. This electric machine is used to convert mechanical energy, supplied by thermoacoustic engine, to an AC form of electrical energy. The purpose of this technology is an electricity production in deep Space, potentially suitable for long term missions far away from Sun.

Dynamic Preisach Hysteresis Model for Magnetostrictive Materials for Energy Application

2013

In this paper the magnetostrictive material considered is Terfenol-D. Its hysteresis is modeled by applying the DPM whose identification procedure is performed by using a neural network procedure previously publised [. The neural network used is a multiplayer perceptron trained with the Levenberg-Marquadt training algorithm. This allows to obtain the Preisach distribution function, without any special conditioning of the measured data, owing to the filtering capabilities of the neural network interpolators. The model is able to reconstruct both the magnetization relation and the Field-strain relation. The model is validated through comparison and prediction of data collected from a typical …

EKF-based estimation and control of electric drivetrain in offshore pipe racking machine

2016

A typical challenge for electric drivetrains is to reduce the number of sensors required for control action or system monitoring. This is particularly important for electric motors operating in offshore conditions, since they work in hostile environment which often damages data acquisition systems. Therefore, this paper deals with verification and validation of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) for sensorless indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) of an induction motor operating in offshore conditions. The EKF is employed to identify the speed of the induction motor based on the measured stator currents and voltages. The estimated speed is used in the motor speed control mode instead of a ph…

Fault Diagnostics for Electrically Operated Pitch Systems in Offshore Wind Turbines

2016

This paper investigates the electrically operated pitch systems of offshore wind turbines for online condition monitoring and health assessment. The current signature based fault diagnostics is developed for electrically operated pitch systems using model-based approach. The electrical motor faults are firstly modelled based on modified winding function theory and then, current signature analysis is performed to detect the faults. Further, in order to verify the fault diagnostics capabilities in realistic conditions, the operating profiles are obtained from FAST simulation of offshore wind turbines in various wind conditions. In this way, the applicability of current signature analysis for …

Autoencoders and Recurrent Neural Networks Based Algorithm for Prognosis of Bearing Life

2018

Bearings are one of the most critical components in electric motors, gearboxes and wind turbines. Therefore, bearing fault detection and prognosis of remaining useful life are important to prevent productivity losses. In this study, a novel method is proposed for prognosis of bearing life using an autoencoder and recurrent neural networks-based prediction algorithm. Promising results have been obtained from the experimental data. A monotonic upward trend of the produced health indicator is obtained for all test cases, being one of critical indicators of a proper prognosis. The remaining useful life estimation is moderately accurate under a limited data.

Autoencoders and Data Fusion Based Hybrid Health Indicator for Detecting Bearing and Stator Winding Faults in Electric Motors

2018

The main objective of a condition monitoring programs is to track the health status of critical components of a machine. In this paper, a hybrid health indicator is proposed to monitor the health status of bearings and stator winding of a motor. The proposed method is based on a feature learning from deep autoencoders and data fusion. The features can be learned by autoencoders using individual current and vibration signals, and then learning features are fused to make final health indicators. The experimental data from a permanent magnet synchronous motor is used to validate the proposed method. Promising results in detecting faults and severities of the stator and bearing faults at differ…

Dynamic analysis of a five degree of freedom robotic arm using MATLAB-Simulink Simscape

2021

In this paper, a dynamic analysis for a 5 degree of freedom (DOF) robotic arm with serial topology is presented. The dynamic model of the robot is based on importing a tri-dimensional CAD model of the robot into Simulink®-Simscape™-Multibody™. The dynamic model of the robot in Simscape is a necessary and important step in development of the mechanical structure of the robot. The correct choice of the electric motors is made according to the resistant joint torques determined by running the dynamic analysis. One can import complete CAD assemblies, including all masses, inertias, joints, constraints, and tri-dimensional geometries, into the model block. The first step for executing a dynamic …

A Gasless Reservoir Solution for Electro-Hydraulic Compact Drives with Two Prime Movers

2020

Abstract Due to an increased focus on improving the energy efficiency and compactness of hydraulic linear actuators, the electro-hydraulic compact drive (ECD) has received increased attention lately. In this study the ECD consists of variable-speed electric motors and fixed-displacement pumps, which are directly connected to the cylinder, thus controlling the linear motion in a throttleless manner. Furthermore, ECDs are self-contained systems, i.e. based on a fully enclosed oil circuit, in order to avoid external contamination and air to enter the system and to increase system compactness. Conventionally a low-pressure gas-loaded accumulator is used as an oil reservoir to compensate for the…
